COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
BAG, PLASTIC (PRODUCE AND POULTRY)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this
Commercial Item Description in lieu of Federal Specification PPP-B-1089.
This commercial item description covers Type-I, perforated and Type-II, non-perforated bags intended for use in the packaging of produce or poultry.
Salient characteristics:
The bags furnished under this description shall be made from untreated, colorless, transparent polyethylene film, intended for use in direct contact with food and conforming to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.
The film thickness and bag dimensions shall be as specified in the contractor order. A tolerance of + 10 percent is permitted in the thickness and + 1/4 inch in the bag dimensions.
Bags shall be furnished with ties of nominal 26-gage wire covered with plastic cover or paper. The tie shall be a minimum of 3/16 inch in width and 4 inches in length.
The seam of the bags shall be capable of supporting a 2-pound-per-inch static load for 5 minutes without exhibiting peel back or slippage of the seam.
The type-I bags shall be perforated (except for the upper 4-1/2 inch + 1/2 inch) with holes which are 1/4 inch + 1/16 inch diameter. The holes shall be evenly spaced with the number of perforation as specified in the contract or order + 15 percent.
The bags shall be flat or square (with gusseted sides) as specified in the contract or order.
Workmanship. The bags shall be uniformly made, free from pinholes, tears, cuts, and wrinkles.
Certification. The contractor shall certify that the product offered meets the salient characteristics of this description, and that the product conforms to the producer’s own drawings, specifications, standards and quality assurance practices and is the same product offered for sale in the commercial marketplace. The Government reserves the right to require proof of such conformance prior to first delivery and thereafter as may be otherwise provided for under the provisions of the contract.
Recovered materials. The manufacturer shall utilize recovered materials to the maximum extent practicable.
Packaging, packing, and marking. The packaging and packing shall be in accordance with normal commercial practice and shall assure acceptance by common carrier and provide product protection against loss and damage during multiple shipments, handling, and storage. The shipping container shall be in compliance with the National Motor Freight Classification and Uniform Freight Classification. Marking shall be as specified in the contract or order.
NOTE: Purchasers should specify type, dimensions, thickness, style (flat or square), and number of perforations.
