ENVELOPE, PACKING LIST (SINGLE SAFETY FOLD)

The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description as a replacement for Style 3, All Classes, of Federal Specification PPP-E-540

This description covers water resistant envelopes for the protection of packing lists and other shipping documents using a single safety fold with a clasp type closure.

1. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS:

A) Construction. Envelopes furnished under this description shall be made from an opaque water resistant material which has a

Bursting Strength of not less than 40 pounds per square inch when tested  accordance with TAPPI T 403 and an average Internal Tearing Resistance in each direction of not less than 100 grams when tested in accordance with TAPPI T 414. Envelopes shall be flat style. The front face shall extend 1-1/2 + 1/8 inches beyond the rear face to form a closing flap at the open end of the envelope. The flap shall have a reinforced hole centered 5/8 + 1/8 inches from the edge to accommodate the clasp. The front face shall have a lightly scored line across the entire width of the envelope 2 + 1/8 inches below the edge of the flap. The rear face shall have a metal clasp firmly attached and positioned so that when the safety fold is formed by folding the envelope on the scored line, the clasp may be easily inserted through the hole in the flap. Attachment holes, centered 3/8 + 1/8 inch from the side edges of the envelope, shall be provided. Two holes shall be located 3/4 + 2/8 inch from the scored line, and 2 shall be 3/4 + 1/8 inch from the bottom edge. All holes shall be reinforced by a metal eyelet with an inside diameter of 3/16 + 1/32 inches. When specified, a legend shall be printed on the front face of the envelope in black letters, centered to within + 1/2 inch. Each letter shall be not less than 1/2 inch high. Envelopes shall pass the Water Resistance Test specified in Section 2.
