COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
BAGS, PAPER (GROCER’S)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this
Commercial Item Description in preference to type I and type II of
Federal Specification UU-B-36
This description covers requirements of kraft paper grocery bags of standard commercial sizes, weights of paper, and types of construction.
Salient characteristics.
Material used in the production of grocer’s bags shall conform to the provisions of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act and regulations promulgated thereunder. The paper shall be sized; self-opening style bags shall be type I; and, square style bags shall be type II. The bags shall be fabricated from two grades of paper, grade A popular weight and grade B heavy weight. The paper shall conform to the requirements as shown in table I. The bag number, type, grade, and construction shall be as specified in the contract or order.
Sizing test. A specimen of kraft bag paper shall be placed on a flat, dry and clean surface. A drop of water (approximately 0.1 cubic centimeter) shall be dropped on the specimen from a height of not more than 3 inches. A watch glass shall be placed over the drop of water immediately after contact with the paper. After 20 minutes the area of the paper contracted by drop shall show partial retention of the drop as evidence by reflectivity.
Test shall be performed for basis weight in accordance with TAPPI T410, bursting strength T403, and tear resistance T414. Acceptance shall be based on an AQL of 4.0 in accordance with MIL-STD-105.
